Archive Consultancy

My goal is to ensure that you get the information and advice you need to make good, strategic decisions.  All my work is delivered on time and within budget and always fulfils, if not exceeds, the brief. As a result of my work, archive services and heritage professionals have been able to undertake all types of change including taking on new staff, improving standards and access, significantly improving preservation of object and archive collections, developing archive-related policy and widening understanding about archives. I also contributed to the successful bid for £7.7 million to the Heritage Lottery Fund for a new history centre in Hull.

My consultancy is based on my experience of working with a wide range of heritage institutions and professionals including archivists, conservators, curators, librarians, policy-makers, educators, project managers, audience –development experts and architects. I cover the core issues around archive care including:

  1. Archictectural design and evaluation
  2. Access and Audience Development Plans
  3. Conservation Management Plans
  4. Strategic planning
  5. Assessing performance against professional standards
  6. Emergency response planning
  7. Intellectual and physcial care of collections
  8. Learning and activity
  9. Research
  10. Training

In my work I use various techniques which are all tailored to the client’s individual needs, budget and timescale.  They include:

  1. Auditing – working particularly with professional standards, I have developed a variety of auditing techniques that enable clear mapping of current practice and development needs.
  1. Consultation and evaluation – in all forms.  I use remote and face-to-face techniques on all scales from one-to-one to regional and national work.  I am skilled at developing consultation techniques to the individual project which gather both qualitative and quantitative information and can be analysed in a meaningful way.
  1. Research  - most projects require research of a large number of sources to develop a context and understanding of the issues involved.
  1. Evaluation and visioning tools to pinpoint current issues and develop motivating goals.

If you would like to discuss a specific project or are interested in any aspect of my consultancy services please contact me to see how I can help you.
