Policy & Research

I have always had an interest in the wider issues affecting the archive sector. I have undertaken numerous projects with policy-making bodies, professional organisations and the archive ‘sector-lead’ bodies across the UK, including The National Archives, the Welsh Government's Museums, Archives and Libraries Division (MALD), the Scottish Council on Archives, the Archives and Records Association and CILIP (Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals).

Recent projects:

  • A light-touch review of the Archive Accreditation scheme across the UK
  • Separate national reviews of Government Policy on Archives: Archives in the 21st Century across England, Wales and Scotland (The National Archives, The Welsh Government and The Scottish Council on Archives respectively)
  • Investigating the feasibility of and then delivering a sustainability indicator for archives
  • Assessing the impact of capital investment in archives (The Archives and Records Association)
  • Reviewing the funding streams made available to the English archive sector by the National Archives

Services including:

  • Helping clients to articulate the key policy or research questions to be explored
  • Identifying and consulting with key stakeholders including senior decision makers, mangers, staff, users, volunteers, depositors and funders
  • Benchmarking against other sectors or organisations
  • Gathering, analysing and reporting on relevant data, both qualitative and quantitative
  • Developing practical and relevant recommendations, often with costed action plans
  • Communicating findings to a wider range of audiences and stakeholders
